Mad Men

I have recently started to watch Mad Men, I can't say im hooked, in fact I don't like most of the characters with the exception of innocent Peggy. However one thing this show has done has thrown me back under the spell of my 40s - 50s/ Columbia Records. Etta James, Frank Sinatra, Roy Hamilton, etc. My newest addition to this playlist "On The Street Where You Live" by Vic Damone.

I love how these singers got their start, singing in lounges. Damone actually had 2 songs reach #7 on the Billboard charts before he left for two years to serve in the United States Army, i'd like to see Ke$ha serve some time with the troops then maybe she will write some lyrics with real words. (This not to say I don't love Tik Tok and Blah Blah Blah).

Anyways this week I salute the 40s and the 50s for how love stricken their music was. This music just makes you feel like your floating. Download "On The Street Where You Live" Vic Damone

Red Light, Yellow Light ...wait for it

Lately my mind has had these Red Flashing lights on! Almost like a Stop sign. I started to have a desire to pursue a career in the music industry at the end of my freshmen year of college. When I got involved with the radio station at Kings College i started to realize I really enjoyed music and promotions. That was 5 years ago and I have certainly come a long way. I have felt for the past year that I am being given the desires of my heart. At 23 I have what could move forward into a promising career in the Music Industry. Its about taking the next step.

However, there are still these red flashing lights that by taking that next step Im going to miss out on something totally different. I think about the time that Christ spent on earth and how devoted to self-sacrificing love he was. You don't hear about his thriving business as the son of a carpenter. You don't hear about him and Joseph trying to build the best business in the land. None of that, his entire life was sacrificed for others. I don't think I have ever fully grasped self-sacrificing love. I see it through war, and through the lives of my family and friends but when have I truely experienced it.

That's what has been on my mind recently, What would true sacrifice look like in my life. Is it giving up my T.V? ...bigger... Is it giving up random shopping trips?? ... bigger... is it giving up starbucks trips each week? I could do all of those but how would any of those help me understand self-sacrifice on a bigger scale. Thats the trail that I have been on the past month and it has given me ideas of the peace corps, ministry, and all around global thinking. Maybe to truly understand self-sacrifice I need to give up everything that has become comfortable to me and devote my time, money, and energy to service.

This is by no means a way of saying that today im quitting my pursuit of a career in music but it IS a starting point of new adventures. It IS a starting point of seeing my life on a bigger scale. And it IS something that I will be praying about this year. I would excel and be happy with a career in the music industry, but would I be missing out on changing others lives. My prayer this year is for God to lead me to the next step. Im ready for whatever he has planned. So that flashing Red light, well for 2010 its more like a flashing yellow light. A slow down and make wise decisions. Yield.

being pulled forward for new years

so for new years i made a couple "resolutions"

#1 become a jet setter....

#2 to blog more

paragraph number 1: im fulfilling part of my first new years resolution by jet setting to San Francisco for a long weekend on Feb. 4th. Im really excited to see Kaitlin and hang out in California. I have always wanted to go to California and im glad i finally have a reason to go. I have a regular couple who come in at Ruby Tuesday and always ask how im preparing for my trip. They are from San Fran and have been giving me all the "cool ideas"

paragraph number 2: im excited about new endeavors and ideas this year. ive been in nashville almost 2 years and it's hard to look into 2010 and wonder/know where i will be at the end of the year. My heart has tried to consistently see myself as working from the ground up here in nashville, but my head hasn't been completely screwed on this past year. I think that this year will be a year that will really define if I can stomach the music industry the rest of my life. After working at Gotee for almost 2 years I have the experience that entry-level jobs are searching for, the real test is do i have the contacts, and personal qualifications to get one of those jobs.

paragraph number 3: wow, what a week it has been, the earthquake in Haiti has literally rocked my center. I was running at the gym the other day, reading the captions on CNN of a girl who had been rescued after two or three days of being trapped in a collapsed building. The reporter talked to her while she was being rescued and said she was hopeful and thankful to be found. They checked in later that day at the make shift hospital she had been taken to only to find she had passed. Also stories of how in the first few days so many bodies were carried off quickly and buried without even being identified or counted. Loved ones that literally will have just disappeared. Its so heartbreaking and it just makes me look at my life and feel so confused/helpless. To be so well off in the USA and to desire to do so much more then send money to the relief efforts going on in Haiti.

paragraph number 4: my hope is this year is to think on a larger scale. new ideas, new adventures and maybe at the end of the year ill be in a new destination.

#3 of 3 cool things to Post

So I've posted a few exciting things about my name "Dan" in a couple albums. Has anyone picked up the new Relient K record?

Sold about 34,000 copies the first week. And debuted #15 on the Billboard charts, and if you pick up the album "Dan Parrott" yes the full name is in the lil booklet. So cool. Get this album somewhere if you have it, and if you refuse to purchase the album you do need at least to buy these songs " Therapy" & "If You Believe"

What else is new with me! Im moving! Yes from my house outside of the city and moving further into the city! Im excited. Ill be figuring out things as I move into an apartment by myself. Im excited for this new venture. Im excited to set up house as I want it, mostly excited about the dishes I clean and the things I clean I will know are all my doings. Im excited about having friends over for dinner and things. Also excited about the location down near the local colleges. Belmont and Vanderbilt will be just a couple blocks away. And ill be in walking distance to several coffee shops, sushi restaurant, and some parks.

Come November 15th I personally invite you to come to Nashville, stay in my humble abode and cater to your every need :)

What else is new, Nashville is cold these days. It seems we have skipped fall completely and jumped straight into Winter. One day we had the air conditioning on and now the heater is shocked that we are firing it up after resting this wonderful summer. I am spending this morning underneath my covers and watching "Heroes" I am 10 episodes in and im in love with the show. Its giving me some thrill as I anxiously await the return of "Lost"

Well thats a little update from Dan in Nashville!
